Getting Started
When the game of Zork begins, the player finds himself (or herself) deposited in front of a boarded-up white house with a mailbox in front of it. Like Myst, there is very little here in terms of explanation. Zork offers no hand-holding. It is up to the player to determine where to go and what to do, mostly by poking around the game's many environments and using the "look" command at every available opportunity.
Gameplay
The game is played by using a fairly simple verb/noun command technique. For instance, type "open door" to open a door, or type "go west" to move in that direction. Type "i" or "inventory" to check your item list. Zork understands all sorts of commands, from "enter" and "open" to "shake" and "deflate". If you get stuck, try rephrasing your command -- you might simply be using a word the game doesn't know.
Commands
If you need suggestions on what commands are available, type "help." To save your game, type "save" and then give your name a game you can "restore" next time. To quit, type "quit".
Goals
It is very easy to get lost while playing Zork, so sketching a map as you go is recommended. As you collect treasure, return to the white house and place it in the trophy case. Only the bravest and most intelligent adventurers will unlock every secret that Zork holds.
Tip: Thievery
Watch out for the Thief! He'll steal items from you, and it'll be a pain to track them down and reclaim them. On the other hand, he's the only one with the tools and skills to open up the Jeweled Egg, so he might not be so bad…
Tip: Saving
Save your game often! It's easy to accidentally die or hit a dead-end in Zork, so you'll want to have a few saved files handy at different points in the game so you won't have to start over from the beginning.
