Options
Warlords offers 23 modes of play. The variations include the number of computer-controlled opponents, the speed of the ball and the ability to catch the fireball. There are also a few "Children's Modes" that use the slower moving fireball and do not allow players to catch the ball.
Basics
Push your joystick or directional pad left and right to move your paddle along the outer wall of your fortress and block the fireball. To catch the fireball, press and hold the A Button. Then, to throw it back, release the A button. If you don't hold the A Button down, you will simply swat the fireball away. There are always four fortresses in Warlords -- the game will support four players, but it also features modes in which the computer controls some of the buttresses.
Tip: Catch
If you're playing a game mode that allows you to catch the fireball, by all means, catch it. It will enable you to pick your shots and aim at your enemy's weakest areas.
Tip: No, Really - Catch
Additionally, if a fireball is caught and released, it flies faster than when it's batted away. Catching the ball is almost always preferable.
