A flashing cursor, shaped like an X, will appear next to your pieces when it's your turn. Use the controller to move the cursor onto one of your pieces, then press the fire button. Now, push the controller in the direction you wish the piece to move...remember, pieces can only move diagonally, and pieces that haven't yet been kinged may only move forward. When you've made your selection, press the fire button to confirm it and end your turn.
Use the Select button to choose a difficulty level, and to decide whether you'll be playing against the computer opponent or a friend. The difficulty level is shown on the top left hand corner of the screen, while the number of players is shown on the right. When you've finished selecting your options, press the Reset button to begin the game.
If you manage to take a piece to the opposite end of the playfield, it will be crowned as a king. That piece will be labeled with a crown. A king is an especially powerful piece that can move in any diagonal direction, rather than just forward. To gain an advantage over your opponent, get as many of your pieces kinged as possible while defending your own edge of the board!
Just like in the board game, the object of Video Checkers is to take all of your opponent's pieces. This is accomplished by jumping them. You can jump an opponent's piece if it is next to own of your own, and if there is an empty space directly behind that piece. The opponent's piece will be removed from the playfield at the end of your turn. Remember, it's possible to jump multiple pieces in a single turn, if your piece lands next to another vulnerable piece after jumping the previous one.
Think carefully about each move, considering the consequences of your actions. One impulsive decision could cost you the entire game!
Pieces on the edge of the board cannot be jumped, protecting them from being captured. It's not a bad idea to keep the pieces on the edge of the board stationary as long as possible, since opposing pieces can't move into the occupied panels and can't jump over the blocking pieces to remove them.
