Getting Started
Press the one player start button at the title screen. After a brief tutorial, you'll be taken to the character select screen. Press the controller in any direction to highlight one of the fighters on the bottom of the screen, then press light slash to choose that character. Next, press left and right to choose between either Power or Speed modes, then tap light slash to begin your first fight.
Matches
Each fight in The Last Blade takes place over three rounds. Both characters are given a limited supply of health, shown at the top of the screen; when a swordsman fails to block or deflect an attack, their health will decrease. Once it's all gone, their opponent wins that round. The first player to win three rounds advances to a more difficult fight. If you've lost a fight, you can always demand a rematch by tapping the one player start button at the continue screen before time expires.
Movement
Each of the game's fighters control in a similar fashion. Hold left or right on the controller to walk in either direction, and tap left or right twice in rapid succession to run. Holding the controller away from the opponent puts you in a defensive stance, letting your block their strikes. Hold down to duck under high attacks, and press up to leap into the air. Pressing left or right along with up lets you jump in either direction.
Controls
There are three basic attacks available in The Last Blade: a weak slash, a hard slash, and a kick. Weak slashes and kicks do little damage but leave the player less vulnerable to counterattacks. Hard slashes do the most damage, but take more time to execute. In addition to basic attacks, each fighter also has special attacks, performed with a joystick motion followed by a button press. For instance, Kaede's Ground Cutter is activated by pressing down, down-right, right, and hard slash.
Deflection
Blocking is a good way to protect yourself from the edge of your opponent's blade, but it leaves little opportunity for you to counter their attacks. That's why it's important to use the deflect button. Tap this button while your opponent is in mid-swing and you'll shove their sword away, leaving them stunned and temporarily vulnerable. Strike back while your rival is recovering for guaranteed damage!
Tip: Deflection Dysfunction
The deflect button isn't just for sword attacks... it can also counter kicks as well. However, it cannot protect you against projectile attacks, so be sure to jump or block any fireballs that come your way.
Tip: The Mode, The Merrier
The mode you select at the start of the game should depend entirely on the way you play fighting games. If you like stringing together flashy combos, Speed is what you need. If you'd rather make every blow count and want to finish off your opponents with devastating super moves, stick with Power.
