How do you improve on a super fighting game -- one revered by fans as perhaps the very best 2D fighting game ever? Easy: make it faster. Way faster. The measured, methodical combat of SSFII is long gone, replaced by deadly high-speed action where a single misstep is the difference between victory and utter humiliation. Play as one of 16 super turbo characters and beat your way to the top of the ladder using all the fighting skills at your command. Only the super-turboest among you has a chance!
If you've played any of the previous Street Fighter II games, be they of the Super variety or otherwise, you pretty much already know how to play SSFIIT. Move with the direction keys, joystick or gamepad, and deliver blows with light, medium and hard punches and kicks. The trick is to chain these maneuvers together, because each character has an arsenal of super turbo combos that deliver far more punishment than a normal attack. Practice makes perfect, so select a character and get in the ring.
The game may seem simplistic, but there's a lot of strategy here. Each character has their own special moves, and each has certain advantages and disadvantages when compared to the others. If you're new to fighters, you're going to lose a lot, but once you get the hang of it things will get easier. As a general rule, the best strategy is to fight defensively until you're ready to deliver some of your more powerful hits. This will give you a chance to observe their tactics and adjust accordingly.
How you like to fight should have some bearing on who you choose to play as. Do you like to land heavy blows at the expense of overall speed? Choose Blanka, Zangief or E. Honda. Prefer to move like a butterfly and sting like a...butterfly? Cammy, Chun Li, or Dee Jay are more your style. Many other characters offer a balance of speed and power. Experiment with all the characters until you find a stable of favorites, then stick with them until you've mastered their moves.
Super Combos are new to Turbo; they weren't in the original SSFII. As you fight, observe the meter below your character's start position at the bottom of the screen. Its level increases as you land successful attacks and perform special moves. When it's full, you can execute a Super Combo, unique to each character (the commands to launch it are unique too), that delivers a super turbo amount of damage -- about 50%, to be specific.
When your character is stunned, the icons floating around his or her head indicate how long it'll take to recover. Reapers mean a long time, angels mean a short time, while stars and birds indicate a medium-length recovery.
Another new move in Turbo is the ability to soften a throw, essentially reducing the damage you take on impact. Tap any button as soon as the throw animation starts. It's harder than it sounds.
It's possible to play the "Super-but-not-turbo" version of your favorite character in this game. You must select your character with the "jab" (fast punch) button, then quickly tap left and right or up and down while tapping jab as the plane flies across the screen. Go up and down for characters in even numbered columns, right and left for those in odd numbered ones.
You can actually chain Super Combos together with normal attacks, essentially keeping your foe from retaliating at all. This takes practice and split-second timing, but if you're successful it's literally possible to defeat an enemy in one giant super turbo move.
