Gameplay

Player One controls the team in red jerseys; the computer or Player Two controls the team in green jerseys. The man directly under your control at any time will have a jersey of a slightly different color, so you can separate him from the rest of your team. When on offense, you have four tries, or "downs" to move ten yards downfield. If you fail (or punt), control of the ball goes to the other team, and you switch to playing defense.

Game Settings

Before you start, press left and right to set one of the four difficulty levels, and up and down to change between a one-player and two-player game. With each level, time on the clock increases and computer artificial intelligence improves. Press the fire button to start the game, with the green team kicking off to the red team.

The Scoreboard

On the scoreboard, the second line on the left denotes what yard line the ball is on. The number on the right displays the number of yards required for a first down. One to four flags in the center of the scoreboard indicate which of the four downs is underway. One to four vertical lines on the lower left indicate the quarter of the game.

Selecting Plays: Offense

The first player starts on offense. After the kickoff, you'll be prompted to choose your first play. There are 9 offensive plays: 1 is a pass to a receiver on the right; 2 is a pass to the same player, but he runs closer to the sideline. Plays 3 and 4 are passes to the left and wide left, respectively. Plays 5 and 6 are passes to the halfback to the right and left, play 7 is a pass to the tight end, play 8 is a punt, and play 9 is a field goal attempt.

Selecting Plays: Defense

Plays 1 and 2 defend the right and left sides of the field, while play 3 covers the center. Plays 4 and 5 are "blitzes", where your team attempts to rush the quarterback from the right or left before he can make a pass, leaving the receivers open. Plays 6 and 7 defend the right and left sides of the field from running plays. Play 8 is punt defense and play 9 is field goal defense, but if the offense has chosen one of those, the game will put you into formation to defend against it automatically.

Passing

Once plays are selected, the team on offense can hike the ball by pressing the fire button. Once the ball is hiked, both teams move into their selected plays. You can control your quarterback when he has the ball; he will either run or pass depending on the play you have chosen. To pass the ball, hold down the fire button, using the directional keys to throw the ball in a chosen direction. You throw the ball upon releasing fire. As soon as the quarterback passes, control switches to the receiver. Use the direction keys to maneuver the receiver into position to make the catch.

Tip: Passing

Learn to pass. Throwing and catching a good pass is hard to figure out, but it’s even harder to run the quarterback every time.

Tip: Auto-Select

If you're having trouble keeping track of your playbook, try playing on difficulty level 1. In that mode, all of your plays are selected for you on both offense and defense.
