Stellar Track depends on a simple, text-based interface. However, its intricacy and strategic foundation prove fun the more you play. Your goal is to travel the galaxy and destroy alien ships within a set amount of time, calculated in "stardates." While your subsystems can be damaged by aliens, repairs, fuel and torpedoes are available at friendly starbases. If your ship is destroyed or you run out of stardates or fuel before destroying the aliens, you've lost the game.
Use the game select or reset buttons to randomly change the number of aliens you must destroy and the number of stardates you have to accomplish your mission. When you're ready to begin the mission, hit the fire button. Once the game begins, you'll see text that reads "Galaxy Map." Push left or right buttons to change the command to navigate the galaxy, locate enemy vessels and attack them. Hit the fire button to make your selection.
The Galaxy Map is an overview of the quadrants and fills in as you scan them, each of which contains two numbers. The first indicates aliens; the second is the number of starbases. Status includes how many aliens and stardates remain, along with your energy and damage levels. Screen color conveys information on the current quadrant. Green means it’s empty; red indicates aliens and gray signifies starbases. If both aliens and starbases are present, it’s red until aliens are destroyed, then gray.
Warping allows you to move among quadrants and sectors. Use it sparingly, though, as it consumes stardates. To warp, select the command hit fire. Then enter the code, 0-8, to indicate the direction. 1 is straight up, 2 is up and right, 3 is due right, etc. 0 indicates where your ship is currently. Once you've entered a vector, hit fire again. Note that you cannot warp through a star; if you try, you'll lose all the energy and stardates associated with the warp but will remain where you are.
Use the photon torpedos and phasors to destroy alien ships. Fire torpedoes by selecting from the menu and aiming the same way you warp. Phasors don’t require as precise aiming, but use ship’s energy. Determine the amount of energy and fire. Alien ships start with 99 units of energy, so once you've exceeded that with phasor blasts, the ship is destroyed. You’ll get a report on the amount of damage inflicted each time you land a successful phasor hit.
Photon torpedoes are deadly weapons because they consume no energy to fire and a direct hit will always destroy the enemy craft. Of course, you only have nine on board, so use them sparingly and get more at friendly starbases.
Dock often with friendly starbases to replenish your fuel and torpedo supply. They'll also fix any damage to your ship. This action consumes stardates, though, so don't do it when it's not necessary.
Your phasor beam weapons are like a flashlight: brightest right where the light is cast, and weaker farther away. The amount of energy damage a phasor blast does is slowly reduced at longer and longer ranges, so try to maneuver close to an enemy before using the phasors.
Time is everything in Stellar Track. While you're getting the hang of the game, keep using the game select key to set up missions where you have plenty of stardates and not too many aliens to destroy. That way you can get used to the controls without worrying about the clock ticking.
Since alien ships start with 99 units of energy, if you want to destroy one with a single phasor blast, you'll have to be practically on top of it. It's best to get relatively close and take the ship out with a couple of medium-power blasts. 99 units is a lot to spend on one shot.
