Basics
The goal of Space Duel is very similar to that of Asteroids: clear the screen of all the asteroids before you lose all your lives. You begin each game with three ships. The controls are: rotate left, rotate right, shoot, thrust and shield. In single-player mode, you simply need to shoot all the asteroids, enemy ships and mines that appear on the screen. You will get a bonus ship every 10,000 points.
Multiplayer
In two-player mode, the rules are a little looser: work together to progress, or shoot each other! You will not lose a life if shot by a human adversary, but you will be rendered powerless for a few seconds. A variation on the two-player mode features both ships tethered together by a thin beam of energy. Ships will move in tandem, making for a very challenging -- and fun -- gaming experience.
Tip: Wraparound
The screen wraps around, which means that anything that goes off the left side of the screen (including your shots) will reappear on the right, and vice-versa. Use this to your advantage to take out asteroids and saucers that are far away.
Tip: Multiplayer
Before joining forces with another player and face the challenge together, sharpen your skills extensively. The tethered mode is the most challenging.
Tip: Debris
Try to work on one or two asteroids at a time. If you break up all the larger asteroids at the beginning, you’ll end up with large numbers of the more dangerous small asteroids, which are harder to hit.
Tip: Getting Started
At the beginning of the game, it’s fairly easy to just stay in the middle of the screen and shoot.
