Getting Started
Press the one player start button to begin the game. After a brief tutorial, you'll be taken to the character select screen, where a dozen different samurai are waiting for you. Press the controller in any direction to highlight one of the available warriors, then tap one of the attack buttons to lock in your choice. You'll be introduced to your first opponent, then taken to a scenic location where you'll lock swords in a fight to the death!
Movement
When the judge shouts “En Garde!,” that's your cue to move! Press left and right on the controller to guide your fighter in either direction. Walking away from your opponent puts you in a defensive stance, letting you deflect sword attacks. Tap left or right twice in rapid succession to chase your opponent or hop away from him. Finally, press up to jump, and hold down on the controller to duck under high attacks.
Matches
Each fight has up to three rounds. Both warriors are given a full health bar at the start of the round, as well as ninety-nine seconds to battle. Every hit a fighter takes drains the energy in their bar; if you take all the opponent's health, or have more health remaining when time expires, you'll win that round. The first warrior to win two rounds advances to the next match. If you lose a fight, you can always try again by pressing the one player start button at the continue screen.
Controls
Your fighter relies on weapon strikes and kicks to achieve victory in battle. Both the strikes and kicks have three different strengths; press the light strike and medium strike buttons together for a devastating hard strike, and the light kick and medium kick buttons together for an especially painful hard kick. Every unblocked attack does damage, but if you attack with your weapon and your strike is deflected, you will briefly be left vulnerable. Be careful!
Special Moves
You're not just limited to sword strikes and kicks! You can also attack from a distance or escape certain death by using special moves. Special moves are performed with a controller motion (for instance, down, down-right, and right), followed by an attack button. You can also use your inner rage as a secret weapon: every time your fighter is hit, the POW meter at the bottom of the screen slowly rises. When it's full, he becomes enraged and does double damage!
Tip: Pet Show
Those animals traveling with Nakoruru and Galford aren't just for show! Galford's trusty husky will pin down enemies when you press down, down-left, left on the controller, followed by one of the kick buttons. Meanwhile, Nakoruru's hawk will swoop down on foes when you press right, down-right, down, down-left, left, then a strike button.
Tip: Wait Your Turn
Patience is key in Samurai Shodown. Wait for your opponent to make a move, then block and counter it. Don't overestimate the time it takes for your rival to recover from his attacks either, or you'll be left in the same predicament that he was!
Tip: A Cut Above
You can give each fight a dramatic end by finishing your foe with a clean hard strike in the final round. If your sword swipes through their midsection, they'll be sliced in half!
