Getting Started
Press the one player start button to begin your journey through the savage land of feudal Japan. After a brief tutorial, you'll be taken to the character select screen. Press the controller in any direction to highlight one of the available fighters, then press the light slash or medium slash buttons to confirm your choice. You'll then travel to the first in a series of intense battles!
Movement
Now that you've found your first opponent, it's time to learn some basic defensive techniques. Press left and right on the controller to walk in those directions. Tap left or right twice quickly to dash. Holding the controller away from your opponent lifts your sword, helping you deflect incoming strikes. Hold down to drop to the floor, and press up to leap into the air. Finally, tap the evade button along with various directions on the controller for quick dodges, ducks, and rolls.
Controls
Press the light slash button to execute a light slash, and the medium slash button to swing the sword with more force. Your most powerful sword strikes can be accessed by pressing light slash and medium slash together. The green bar at the top of the screen indicates your fatigue level. If you're careless with your blade, you'll drain the bar and weaken your attacks!
Kicks
Your auxiliary attacks are performed with the kick button. Press it when you're standing at a distance from your adversary to send a foot flying his way, or press it when you're standing nearby to give him a nice, not-so-friendly shove. The shove itself won't hurt your opponent at all, but it will disorient him, making him vulnerable to other attacks! Kicks don't do much damage either, but they're useful if your fatigue level is low and you need time to catch your breath.
Special Moves
Special moves can be performed by entering a joystick command, followed by an attack button. For instance, to send Galford's faithful husky after an opponent, you'd enter down, down-left, left, and then tap light slash. Each character also has an especially powerful super move which will disarm your enemy, but these can only be accessed when the POW meter on the bottom of the screen has been filled.
Matches
Each duel in Samurai Shodown V is split into three rounds. Both fighters are given a full bar of health at the start of each round, but that health depletes as they're struck with attacks. The first fighter to completely drain the other's health is declared the winner of that round. Win two rounds and you'll defeat your opponent, then move on to a more difficult adversary. If you lose a duel, you can always give it another shot by pressing the one player start button before time expires.
Tip: Anger Management
If you're on the losing end of a fight, you can always turn things around by pressing light slash, medium slash, and kick together. Your POW meter will turn into a rage gauge, and you'll put more power behind every strike. However, once the rage gauge empties, you'll lose your POW meter for the rest of that match.
Tip: Patience, Grasshopper!
Waiting for the right time to strike has never been more important than it is in Samurai Shodown V. Your fatigue level forces you to make the most of every sword swing, so don't mash those attack buttons. Wait to find an opening in your opponent's defense, then swing to make each strike really count.
Tip: Disarmed
If your opponent is proficient with a weapon, use a super move to disarm him, then stand between him and his blade to give yourself the upper hand. It's cheap, but hey, all's fair in love and samurai battles!
