Basics
Samurai Shodown IV continues the much-loved 2D fighting game, bringing together 17 of the greatest warriors in Japan to vie for dominance. The evil Amakusa's castle has materialized in Shimabura, and the spirit is terrorizing the region. You must choose a character and battle your way through round after round of deadly fighting mayhem to reach Amakusa and destroy the spirit. But is your goal to save Japan, or simply to replace one villain with another? The choice is yours.
Choose a Play Style
Each character in SSIV has two play modes – Slash (Chivalrous) and Bust (Treacherous). You choose your mode before beginning the game, and your decision affects not only the story development, but the moves, combos and appearance of your chosen character. This essentially doubles the number of available playable characters, since the dark and light mirrors of each often have very different moves and storylines. Your choice dictates everything from who you face to how the game ends.
Samurai 101
The Samurai Shodown games are a little more weapon-oriented than other 2D fighters, relying less on complex combos and more on well-executed basic attacks. You can watch a controls demonstration at the beginning of the game. Controls are pretty simple: a button each for light, medium and strong slashes (or punches) and one for kicking; control your character with the direction keys or gamepad. Practice stringing several attacks together to wear your opponent down.
Strategies
There are all kinds of Samurai Shodown players -- those who choose one character and master their every move, and those who like to sample a little of everything and play whatever happens to suit their mood. Each character is evenly balanced against all the others, though you may find that some techniques are more effective against certain opponents. The real trick to mastering this game is about understanding how other fighters behave as well as learning your own unique attacks.
Tip: Difficulty
Your foes get tougher at higher difficulty levels, of course, but game rules change as well. On higher difficulties certain moves and blocks are disabled.
Tip: Honorable Death
New to Samurai Shodown IV is the suicide maneuver, or "Honorable Death." If you commit suicide, your character enters the next round with a maxed-out POW gauge, meaning you can unleash your most devastating combos right away. To commit honorable suicide, press Left, right, down, and the Start button.
Tip: POW!

Tip: Timing is Everything
The match timer isn't just there to determine round length -- you have to actually reach the final boss within a specified time limit if you wish to see your character's ending.
Tip: Fatality
If you finish off an opponent with a special move in the final round, he’ll be dazed for a few seconds. When this happens, a list of commands will appear at the top of the screen. Input these commands and you’ll finish off your foe with a brutal fatality move!
