Press the start button at the title screen. After a brief tutorial, the character select screen will appear. Press the controller in any direction to choose one of the twelve available fighters, then press an attack button to lock in your choice. Next, press left and right to select between the Slash (Good) and Bust (Evil) fighting styles, then tap an attack button. Finally, press up and down to select your difficulty level, and press any attack button to begin the game.
Getting cut by a sword is generally not a good idea in real life, but in the world of Samurai Shodown III, it has its benefits. Every time you're attacked, the POW meter at the bottom of the screen increases. When it's full, your own strikes temporarily double in strength. You can also perform a super attack by following the directions shown on the bottom of the screen; if it connects, you'll do incredible damage to your foe and force them to drop their weapon!
When the first fight begins, press left and right on the controller to walk in those directions. Pressing in the opposite direction of your opponent puts you in a defensive posture that lets you block your adversary's attacks. Tap left or right twice in rapid succession to move more quickly in those directions. Hold down to duck, and tap up to jump. You can also jump toward or away from your rival by pressing up and left, or up and right on the controller.
You have four different basic attacks in Samurai Shodown III. These include three weapon strikes (performed with the light, medium, and hard attack buttons) and a single kick (performed with the kick button). Hard weapon strikes do the most damage, but also make you vulnerable to counterattack. You can also evade blows by pressing light and medium attack together, or execute an especially powerful blow by pressing medium and hard attack together.
Each fighter in Samurai Shodown III has a handful of special moves which can be performed by entering a controller motion (for instance, right, down, and down-right), followed by one of the attack buttons. These amazing attacks are unique to each character, ranging from Galford's Plasma Blade to Nakoruru's Hawk Strike. Special moves also vary depending on whether you chose a Slash or Bust fighting style at the start of the game.
Each match is split into three rounds, with both fighters receiving a full health bar at the start of each round. When a fighter is hit with a clean sword strike or other attack, his or her health drops, and when all that health is gone, the fighter is knocked out and loses the round. The first fighter to win two rounds is declared the winner of the battle and proceeds to a more difficult match. If you've lost a match, you can always try again by tapping the start button before time expires.
Samurai Shodown veterans be warned -- the Bust fighting style for each character is often profoundly different from the more traditional Slash style. For instance, Galford abandons his loyal husky for more lightning attacks, while Nakoruru trades her hawk for a ferocious wolf.
Samurai Shodown III places a greater emphasis on exploiting vulnerabilities than other fighting games. Keep your sword sheathed until your opponent makes a fatal error, then lay into him with a hard slash! If you're quick, you may even gain a counter bonus that increases the damage you'll do.
