Controls
The four-button control system of SSII will be familiar to anyone who played the original, and easily learned by anyone who's played a 2D fighter. When you select Game Start from the main menu you'll be treated to a brief demonstration of how the controls work (press any button to skip it). The basic moves -- light and medium slash and kick -- are just the beginning of combat in SSII. The fighters' true power lies in devastating combo attacks that you'll have to learn for yourself.
Basics
Samurai Shodown II is a 2D combat game that pits your character, selected from a pool of 15, against all the others in a series of bouts to determine who is the best samurai in feudal Japan. The action is swift, the combos deadly, and only one can be victorious. Your objective is as simple as it gets -- beat your enemies, one by one, until you reach the final confrontation with a shadowy figure whose dark intentions go well beyond just winning a fighting contest. Good luck, Samurai!
Strategies
As you ascend the ladder toward Mizuki, your final opponent, you'll face increasingly challenging warriors, each with their own fighting style. Each also has some weakness that you can exploit...if you discover what it is. Samurai Shodown II isn't an easy fighter, and it will take some practice before you're able to master it. The most important strategy is to learn your character's strengths, weaknesses and special moves. Understanding your character's capabilities will help you defeat others.
Characters
There are 15 playable characters in Samurai Shodown II -- up from eleven in the original. The four new characters bring another dimension to gameplay, so even Samurai Shodown veterans will find some new challenges here. Each of the characters is involved in the fight for their own reasons, and as you climb the ladder toward Mizuki the story surrounding these fighters will unfold. There's more going on here than a championship bout, but to learn the truth you must face the ultimate warrior.
Tip: The Rage Gauge
Watch the Rage Gauge as you fight -- it increases with successful attacks and combo moves. When your Rage Gauge is full, your character receives a brief and dramatic increase in attack power. This can turn the tide of a fight!
Tip: Come Get Some
You can try to provoke your opponent by tapping the punch and kick buttons at the same time. Don't do this when you're up close and personal, though, because you lower your guard in the interest of mocking your foe.
Tip: Locked Swords
When your sword is locked with an enemy's, quickly tap the attack buttons to try and gain the upper hand. If you win this face-off, you'll have a second to attack while your opponent recovers.
Tip: Meat with Friends
During longer battles, a delivery man might run through and drop a piece of meat. Grab it before your opponent does to heal some of the damage you've taken. Eating during strenuous exercise usually isn’t a good idea, but this is an exception.
