Getting Started
Press the one player start button to start the show, then any attack button to advance past the tutorial. When the character select screen appears, press the controller in any direction to place the cursor over your favorite fighter, then tap an attack button to select him or her. After making your choice, you'll then select your first opponent with the controller and an attack button. Once that's finished, your first battle will begin!
Planes
One feature that differentiates Real Bout Fatal Fury Special from other fighters is that all the battles take place on two planes. You'll normally fight in the foreground, but by tapping the line change button you'll slip into the background and out of harm's way. You can stay there for as long as you like until your opponent hits you with an attack. If you're ready to return to the foreground, just tap the line change button again.
Movement
Now that you've started your first fight, it's time to learn some basic defensive skills. Hold left or right on the controller to walk in either direction. You can cover ground more quickly by running; just tap left twice or right twice in rapid succession. Holding the controller away from your opponent lets you block their blows, while holding down lets you duck under high attacks, and tapping up lets you jump over low ones.
Barriers
No victory ever comes easily in Real Bout Fatal Fury Special, but the barriers on either screen can give you an edge. Pin your rival against a wall, then attack to force him into it. As the opponent is shoved into the wall, it takes damage and eventually falls apart. Once a wall is destroyed, the person closest to it is struck with the falling debris and is temporarily dazed. Now's your chance to deliver some serious punishment!
Controls
Three basic attacks are available to you in Real Bout Fatal Fury Special, including a punch, a kick, and a hard attack. Tap the punch button to nail your opponent with a quick, light jab. Tap the kick button for a more damaging midsection blow. Finally, tap hard attack to really lay on the pain with a power-packed punch or kick! You can also perform special moves by entering a command on the controller (for instance, down, down-right, and right) before pressing one of the buttons.
Matches
Each fight is a best of three round battle for dominance. Both players get a full bar of health at the start of a round, but lose health whenever they're hit with punches, kicks, or other attacks. The player who drains his opponent's health bar first is declared the winner of the round. Win two rounds and you'll move on to a more difficult opponent. If you lose, don't worry... you can always declare a re-match by pressing the one player start button before time expires.
Tip: A Real Breakthrough
Walls can be more quickly demolished if you trap your foe in the corner and pummel him with punches. They do just as much damage to the wall as flashier attacks, and can be performed more quickly.
Tip: Power Up!
Once it's full, the power meter on the bottom of the screen can be used to perform devastating super moves. However, if you wait until your health bar turns red, you can perform desperation moves, the most powerful attacks in the game! Just don't wait too long, because the energy stored in the power meter eventually dwindles down to nothing if you don't use it.
Tip: Wall Or Nothing
Here's a word of warning to anyone who loved the ring outs from Fatal Fury Real Bout. Pushing your opponent off the edge of the screen won't score you an instant knock-out, and the walls are repaired at the start of every new round.
