Use the directional keys to control the Prince's movements. To move left or right, press in that direction. Tapping a directional button will cause the Prince to dash forward slightly; holding down in one direction puts the Prince into a full-speed sprint. To grab a low overhang, press up, allowing the Prince to hop slightly. To duck and climb down ledges, press down. To leap forward, press up while running.
The action key has several functions depending on your situation. When attempting to jump toward a distant ledge, hold down the action key to grab hold and pull yourself to safety. Hold down the action key while walking in order to move slowly. Press the action key whenever you encounter treasures, items or switches that you wish to collect or use. And, of course, once you've obtained a sword, the action key becomes crucial for dueling.
With a sword in his possession, the Prince becomes an expert duelist -- with your help, of course. When enemies appear, the Prince will automatically draw his blade and enter En Guarde mode. Use the action button to attack an enemy and press the up button to parry attacks. If you move toward an enemy, you may end up swapping places with him and slip away without a fight. To sheathe your weapon, press down, but be aware that this leaves you completely defenseless -- one hit and you're done for.
Throughout the Sultan’s dungeon, you'll encounter many traps -- cutting blades, spike-filled pits, collapsing floors -- that can affect the Prince’s health. The Prince has three life points; a minor injury, such as a two-story fall or a combat wound, will cost one health point; a major injury, like falling from a great height or succumbing to a trap, is instantly fatal. Health points can be replenished with potions found throughout your journey.
You have exactly one hour to complete the game -- and every second counts against you. It pays to be cautious in new situations, but don't delay too long. Take decisive action or you'll never make it in time.
In addition to finding health potions, you'll sometimes encounter flasks of poison which reduce your life energy. Watch carefully -- poison emits blue bubbles and health potions give off red bubbles.
When battling enemies, your best approach is to parry attacks and then follow up with a counter-strike. And, after you make an attack, always block -- you're most vulnerable if an enemy blocks your swing.
A variety of powerups and potions can be found in the dungeon, including a potion that protects the Prince from long falls by making him lighter, and a vase that extends maximum life. Beware, however, of the reversal potion: it turns the screen upside-down, making the game far more difficult.
