Controls

Use the directional keys to control the Prince's movements. Pressing Up will cause him to hop slightly to grab a low overhang, while Down will duck and climb down ledges. Tapping either Left or Right will cause the Prince to dash forward slightly in that direction; holding a directional button down will cause him to break into a full-speed sprint. Press Up while running to leap forward.

Actions

The Action key has been reduced somewhat in function from the first game; it's no longer used for combat. You'll need to use Action to access many of the Prince's abilities, however. Hold Action when jumping over a large gap to grab the far ledge. Press it when you find a switch or other device in order to activate it. Finally, use the Action key to pick up items and treasures you find in the course of your adventure.

Dueling

Unlike the original Prince of Persia, you can draw your sword at any time with the Fight key. As in the first game, pressing Up will defend against enemy attacks, while Down will sheathe the weapon. Remember that you have different weaknesses depending on whether or not your sword is drawn -- you can be killed by any enemy attack if you're not in fight mode, while falling off a ledge is fatal if you're using your sword.

Traps

You'll encounter many traps throughout the Sultan's dungeon. Watch for cutting blades that can slice you open; pits full of spikes, quicksand or lava; dart guns that fire deadly projectiles; and fake floors that collapse or spin when you step upon them.

Health

The Prince has three points of life (which can be replenished with the health potions you find from time to time). Minor injuries such as falling from a two-story height and being wounded in combat will dock you a single point of health; major injuries like falling from a great height or succumbing to a trap are instantly fatal. The game ends when you complete the final level or run out of health.

Tip: Magic Carpet

When you find a magic carpet, you can ride it by standing over it and pressing Down. But the carpet is more than a little clumsy -- be sure all obstacles are cleared out of your way before taking flight or you'll soon regret it.

Tip: Attack By Snakes

Snakebites are instantly fatal, and the snakes themselves are shockingly fast. Kill them immediately when they appear -- but remember, you're defenseless when crawling, so always beat a hasty retreat when you meet a serpent while in tunnels.

Tip: Floating Heads

The floating head enemies can be incredibly difficult to kill, especially with your basic sword. Fight them with defensive strikes by holding Up as you attack. Naturally, scoring the first hit will make battles far more manageable.

Tip: Power Up

To complete the final area of the game, you'll need no less than 11 points of health. Certain enemies will drop life power-ups, so hunt them down and beef up before the final showdown.
