Controls
Gamers familiar with the original Pitfall should have no trouble picking up the controls to this game. You maneuver Pitfall Harry with the direction keys -- primarily for running, but also for swimming and climbing. The fire button will make Harry jump, useful for leaping across dark voids and avoiding treacherous foes.
Goals
Pitfall II offers several objectives, most of which can be completed out of order. You must recover the Raj Diamond, Rhonda and Quickclaw to win the game. However, you’ll score extra points if you collect other treasures -- 28 stolen gold bars, for example. Also, there are rumors of a rare and valuable prehistoric species of cave rat lurking in the Lost Caverns. The game ends when you’ve recovered Rhonda, Quickclaw and the diamond, so plan carefully if you wish to collect everything.
Enemies
A number of treacherous forms of wildlife threaten Harry on his journey. You’ll dodge electric eels, ferocious vampire bats, razor-beaked condors, poisonous frogs, even albino scorpions. Since Harry is unarmed, you have to dodge these menaces, either by jumping over them, creeping under them, or avoiding them altogether.
Scoring
Every time you see a red cross on the ground, touch it to establish a new base camp. Harry can’t be killed in this game; whenever he’s struck by an enemy, he returns to the last base camp he established -- however, he loses points as he makes the journey. All of your objectives score you points, up to a maximum of 199,000. A flawless playthrough will see Harry collect Rhonda, Quickclaw, the diamond, the rat and all 28 gold bars without ever falling victim to a single hazard.
Tip: All Your Base
Make sure you establish a base camp in a strategic location. If you get killed, you'll lose fewer points if the red cross marker is nearby.
Tip: Balloons
Rhonda may be lost, but she’s not stupid. She’s filled some sample bags with steam from an underground vent and released these makeshift balloons in one of the caverns. Jump at the balloon’s dangling line to ride to higher levels, but watch out for bats. They’ll pop your balloon if you’re not careful.
Tip: Game Over
Don't forget that the game is automatically over once you collect Rhonda, Quickclaw and the Raj Diamond. Get as many points as you can beforehand!
Tip: Maps
Sketching a map of the Lost Caverns may help you on your journey -- it's a long one!
