Basics
Pitfall's controls are simple and elegant: Harry can run and he can jump. Timing is everything. At the start of the game, you will have 2000 points, three lives...and 20 minutes to collect as many points (and as much treasure) as possible.
Hazards
Harry's rule of thumb: when in doubt, jump. Hazards too large to jump -- tar pits and alligator ponds -- are often situated right below a well-placed vine for convenient swinging. If there's no vine available, Harry’s been known to hop across the alligator's heads and keep going. Or in the case of shrinking tar pits, a carefully timed sprint does the trick and keeps Harry alive until the next screen.
Enemies
Scorpions and snakes will kill you dead. Get whacked by a log or fall down a hole, and you lose points. You can lose all your points, but lose all your lives and the game is over. It’s a constant race against the clock. If you can last 20 minutes in the jungle and live to tell about it, well, we’d like to hear the story.
Tip: Go Left, Young Man
If you run to the left, you can avoid logs much more easily. In addition, if you die, you’ll respawn on the other side of the hazard that you were trying to cross.
Tip: Gator Aid
If you position yourself on the eyes of an alligator and don’t move, you can stand on its head while it opens its mouth.
Tip: Shortcuts
Traveling underground counts as a shortcut, so each screen you cross underground counts as three regular screens. The only way to get all the treasures is to use these shortcuts.
