Basics
Might and Magic V: Darkside of Xeen is a fantasy role-playing game. Using a turn-based interface, you will guide six adventurers through countless dangers as they struggle to save their world from a mysterious force that seems intent on destroying everything. Though this game carries on the story begun in Might and Magic IV: Clouds of Xeen, it's not necessary to have played it in order to enjoy Darkside.
Controls
Mouse-driven and turn-based, Darkside of Xeen's interface is intuitive and straightforward. To the right of the game window is the control panel; iconic buttons such as "attack" and "magic" can be selected with a click. The arrow buttons below move your party through the world (you can also use the arrow keys for this). Basic information about characters is visible at a glance thanks to their portraits at the bottom of the screen, and a click on any portrait will bring up more details.
Getting Started
You'll be controlling the actions of six adventurers. Each one has a race and class, and statistics you customize by "rolling" in the character generation screen. Choose your adventurers wisely, as their capabilities will guide you through the game. As your party gains experience, their statistics and skills will improve. If you prefer not to generate your own characters, the game provides a default party you can choose. You can also import your party from Might and Magic IV.
Objectives
In addition to the overarching goal of eliminating the threat to your world, you'll take on numerous sub-quests. These adventures may have one or many objectives and may take minutes or hours to complete, but collectively they represent the body of the game experience. Your objectives are organized and managed in the journal, so you can review them whenever you like.
Equipment
You'll gather a collection of gear during your travels -- money, weapons, equipment and magical items. You can also buy items at shops in town. Bear in mind that not every weapon or item can be used by every race and class. Sneaky robbers won't wear heavy metal armor, while a warrior is dead meat without at least some chain mail.
Tip: Balance
A balanced party is important. Include some close combat, some magic, some healing, some stealth, and build from there.
Tip: Identification
There's a ton of equipment available in this game, and it can be hard to keep track of what's what. A small fee at the outfitter's will provide a helpful identification service.
Tip: Money
Collect wealth in the form of gold and gems. You can deposit and withdraw your cash from banks you'll find in town; this helps keep your inventory tidy and uncluttered.
Tip: Automap
A handy automap tracks where you've been, and even notes your coordinates -- useful for trying to locate a precise spot.
