Getting Started
You control a party of six adventurers in Clouds of Xeen, so the first step along the way is getting that party set up. The game includes a default group you can use if you're eager to get into the game; otherwise, generate your own party from a selection of races, classes and skills. Abilities are dictated by statistics such as intelligence, might and luck. Click the roll button to randomize these stats. Party members gain levels of experience and improve over the course of adventures.
Basics
Clouds of Xeen is a turn-based, menu driven role-playing game in which you take control of a party of six bold adventurers on a quest to rescue Crodo and defeat the evil poisoning the land. It's not necessary to have played any of the other Might and Magic games to enjoy this one -- it helps, but isn't required. When starting, you can choose one of two difficulty levels: Adventurer and Warrior. The former goes a little easier on you, especially during combat.
Equipment
You're also responsible for managing your party's gear: weapons, armor, potions and any other items they're carrying around. New equipment can be found for sale in shops or picked up during your adventures. Not all weapons or armor can be worn by all professions.
Objectives
Like any good role-playing game, Clouds of Xeen has a story arc that you'll follow in the course of your adventures. You know the ultimate goal, but along the way you'll pick up dozens of subquests, each with their own objectives. A journal system keeps your tasks and objectives organized for you. As you successfully complete quests, you'll get rewards -- money, items, experience -- that will improve your party and increase your chances of success.
Controls
Every control in this game is easily accessible via intuitive mouse clicks. The control panel on the right displays iconic buttons: move around by clicking the arrow buttons; other buttons cast spells, activate items, defend, attack and so forth. Character portraits display health and status, and you can click any of them to view more information and an inventory screen. Clouds of Xeen is a turn-based game, so even during combat you'll be giving orders through menus.
Tip: Getting Started
The game begins in the town of Vertigo, which is having a bit of a pest problem. Good thing a band of heroes just happened by...go check with the mayor to see if you can help.
Tip: Balance
If you want to create your own party, go for balance -- at least one fighter class plus a cleric to heal, a sorcerer to blow stuff up and a robber to pick locks. Remaining spots are flexible; round out your party however you like.
Tip: Magic
Clerics and Sorcerers have access to arcane spells, which can blast the enemy, heal your party or provide other benefits. Experiment with these spells to learn how they work.
Tip: First Round's On Me
You might get some useful tips in taverns, but nobody likes a cheapskate -- buy a drink before you click on "tip."
Tip: Explore
It may go without saying, but poke into everything. You never know where a useful item or pile of gold may be hidden.
Tip: Pyramid Portals
"The stars are not aligned" is a fancy way of saying that Might and Magic V: Darkside of Xeen is not installed. That game included the pyramid portals as a way of teleporting great distances.
