Begin by selecting the game type with the select button: games one through four are single player games against the computer; games five through eight are for two human players. The only other variant in game types is the number and placement of outfielders, which you can see as you browse through the selections. When you're ready to begin playing, press the game reset button.
Player one is the blue team and starts at bat. Wait for the pitch, then swing the bat by pressing any direction -- successful batting in Home Run is a matter of timing. If you hit the ball, your player will begin running immediately. By default, the player will try to run all the bases and back to home plate. If it looks like the ball is going to be caught, or your runner might be tagged, press the fire button to stop him at the next base.
When pitching, your objective is to prevent the opposing team's players from scoring runs, either by striking out their batters or tagging their runners after your fielders have caught the ball. Pitching is as simple as pressing the fire button. The throw defaults to an automatic fastball, but you can change it by pressing a direction after the pitcher throws: left and right to curve in the corresponding directions, or press down to throw a slow ball.
After the batter hits the ball, you take control of the outfield and try to catch the ball. Touch the ball with one of your fielders to catch it; if the runner has not reached a base, he is automatically out. Otherwise, you must touch either the runner or the base he's trying to reach before he gets there to put him out.
The readout at the top of the screen provides the game status. Scores are colored to match the appropriate team. "I" refers to the inning number; "O" to the current number of outs; "S" to the current number of strikes, and "B" to the current number of balls.
It's really hard to strike a batter out in Home Run. The best way is to select a pitch style (curve, fast, etc.) right after you throw, then change it once the ball's half there. It won't get them every time, but it can help.
Outfielders move in tandem; they cannot be controlled individually. Nor can they throw the ball to one another (it was 1978, after all) -- use this to your advantage. If you're past second and the fielder on the far left catches the ball, you can probably make home without any risk.
A batter can score an automatic home run by hitting the ball directly over second base and off the field. Assuming it's not caught by an outfielder, that team scores a point.
