Rooms
The house has twenty-four rooms -- six on each floor. Each floor has several staircases leading up and down. The single digit number at the lower left of your screen indicates which floor you're on. Take note of where you begin, because you need to return here when you have all the urn pieces. It's always on the first floor, right-hand side.
The Urn
The urn was broken into three pieces during an earthquake, and the ghosts have been moving the pieces around. Using the light from your matches, find and pick up each of the three pieces. Once you've got them all, the urn will magically reassemble, and it's time get out of this scary place.
Overview
It's a dark and stormy night...seriously. Old Man Graves' house is so gloomy that you can't see much of anything. Fortunately, you've brought along plenty of matches to light your way. You maneuver your character, represented by the pair of eyes in the darkness, using the direction keys. Push the fire button to light a match. There's no limit to the number of matches you can light, which is good news because the wind will get in through cracks from time to time and blow them out.
Helpful Items
Other items that may help are scattered around the mansion. Old Man Graves had a magical scepter that will render you invisible to the ghosts and creatures lurking in the house's dark corners. Since many doors are locked in later difficulty levels, there's also a master key somewhere in the house. Here's the trick: you can only carry one item at a time, so if you're carrying the scepter and you find an urn piece, you have to put one down to pick up the other. You can carry all three urn pieces at once, but nothing else. A picture of the item you're holding appears in the lower right corner of the screen.
Lives
Of course, this house is haunted, and there's really no defense against creatures from the beyond. If you're touched by a ghost or other hazard, you're "scared to death" and lose one of your lives. If you get scared to death nine times (you're like a cat!), the game is over.
Tip: Stage Select
You can select one of nine game types with the select key. Each successive number,from one to nine, increases the difficulty, number of opponents, presence of locked doors, and level of darkness in the haunted house. To start out, it's best to begin at difficulty level one. Hit the game reset key to begin.
Tip: Searching
Do a quick, matchlit sweep of each room as you enter. It's so dark in the house that you need the matches to see anything -- at higher difficulties, you even need them to see the walls. You don't want to miss a critical item!
Tip: Scepter
Use the scepter! It renders you invisible to all the dangers of the mansion. Strategic use of this item will keep you alive long enough to learn your way around and determine what items are where.
Tip: Difficulty 1
At difficulty level one, the walls are visible, so you can begin to learn how to navigate the haunted house. At higher difficulties, it's so dark that you can't even see the walls, so you'll depend utterly on those matches. Play through at least once on the easiest difficulty just to get a feel for the game.
Tip: Difficulty 7
In game difficulty level seven and above, the bat will move whatever objects you're carrying to another room in the manor if you let him touch you. You'll have to start your search over again.
