Just like its real world counterpart, Golf allows you to play nine holes on a preset course. Each stroke you take to sink the ball is counted against the "par" for that hole, which is the average number of strokes necessary to sink the ball. You want to score at or under par, though there's no penalty -- except shame -- if you don't.
To start a game, use the game select button to choose one or two players, then push reset. Your current score, hole number and par for each hole is displayed at the top of the screen. The total par for the nine-hole course is 36. In two player games, whoever has the lowest total score is the winner (and gets the bragging rights back at the clubhouse).
The green is indicated by a dark green patch of grass at the end of the fairway. Once your ball lands on the green, the screen switches to the putting view. Now all you see is the green, along with your ball, the hole and you. Once again, maneuver your golfer toward the ball, aim carefully, wind up and putt. You're using a putter at this point, so the ball won't go too far no matter how hard you swing.
Move your player around the screen for the best swing position. Your golf club always points toward the ball. Line up the tip of your club with the ball -- represented by a blue dot -- and hold the fire button to begin your backswing or windup. The longer you hold the button, the harder you'll swing. When you're ready, release the fire button and your golfer will whack the ball, which will go flying in the direction you hit it.
Perhaps the most challenging aspect of Golf is that the game's perspective makes it hard to tell which way you're aiming the ball. Just remember: the ball will always travel away from the club in a perpendicular manner, so line up your golfer accordingly.
You can't shoot your ball "over" or through the area surrounding the course, which is called the rough -- it's an impassible barrier. Instead, you must find a way to shoot around it in as few strokes as possible.
Don't release from your backswing too early. Experiment with how far back you should swing to hit the ball with different levels of power. Don’t worry about slicing and whiffing, as such embarrassments won't happen in this game.
Once you've begun a backswing, you can't stop or alter the direction the ball will travel. If you realize you've made a mistake, move the golfer away from the ball entirely before letting go of the button.
While out on the fairway, watch out for trees and other obstacles. Water traps and sand traps will gobble up your ball if you're not careful. If the ball has enough range and momentum, it's possible to shoot it right over these hazards, which are otherwise best avoided.
