Basics
Two players: each controls a team. Begin by choosing among the three game types, and then hit the game reset button to start the clock. The orange player always begins on offense. Offense chooses a play formation with the direction keys, and confirms with the fire button, then Defense does the same. Offense has four downs to get the ball past the blue first down marker on the field. Defense tackles by maneuvering a player into the path of the ball carrier and touching him.
Points
The offensive team scores a touchdown and receives seven points for carrying the ball into the other team's end zone. Defense can score a safety by tackling the opponent behind his goal line. There are no field goals in this game. You may pass, using the fire button, on any offensive play except the punt play, and passes must come from behind the line of scrimmage. Any player can catch the ball, so aim carefully.
Modes
In game 1, Offense controls the ball carrier with the direction keys, while Defense controls linemen. Defense can switch to defensive back control by holding the fire button. Non-controlled players loosely follow the play. In game 2, Offense and Defense control the same players as above; non-controlled players follow the play exactly as it's chosen. In game 3, both sides program in plays. You won't have any direct control over your players, but Offense can pass or punt with the fire button.
Plays
There are five offensive and five defensive plays, selected by pushing the direction keys. Offensive plays: press up for split left, right for tight right, down to split right, and left for tight left. Pressing the fire button orders a punt play. Defensive plays: press up for wide left, right for tight right, down for wide right, left for tight left, and press the fire button to go deep. Once you confirm a play, you cannot change it.
Tip: Aimable Pass
In games one and two, you can use the direction keys to steer the football left and right after the quarterback passes it.
Tip: Coaching
If you want to experiment with playing as a coach, play game types two and three. In these, you still call plays, but have reduced control over your players.
