Each player controls an "explorer" who begins on one corner of the game grid. Move your explorer around by using the direction keys, and view a clue by stopping on a grid square and pressing the fire button. Clues will display briefly, so memory plays a big role in finding the flag before your opponent (or within the time allotted). In some game variations, the grid’s boundaries are impermeable; in others, you can exit one side of the grid and reenter the other.
Clues come in two forms: arrows and numbers. Arrows can be pointing up, down, right, left or diagonal, toward the flag’s location. Numbers tell you the distance between your explorer and the flag, in number of squares. For example, a "2" would indicate that the flag is two squares away. Arrows only tell direction, and numbers only tell distance. To capture the flag, you must keep track of both sets of clues.
Flag Capture offers 10 game types. In games 1-7, two players explore simultaneously or take turns. Games 8-10 are single-player searches, in which the explorer has 75 seconds to locate the flag. In some game variations (1, 2, 5 and 8), the flag remains fixed for the entire search. In others, the flag moves one square every time a clue is revealed. Moving-flag games can be challenging, especially when the grid has no boundaries. After you select your game type, push the Reset button to begin.
Some squares are booby-trapped. If, while searching for a clue, you uncover a bomb, you are forced to return to your starting point and begin your search anew.
Horizontal and vertical arrows are more useful than diagonal arrows. They immediately tell you that the flag is in the same row or column as the arrow, narrowing down possible hiding places.
If you're playing a simultaneous game, pay attention to both your clues and your opponent's; this can double the speed with which you'll narrow down the flag’s location.
It's not always necessary to retrieve a clue from every square you land on. In games 5 through 7, in fact, you’ll want to be frugal with your clue collecting in order to locate the flag using the fewest possible clues. Only get a clue when you must know where to go next.
To successfully snag the flag, you’ll have to combine clue information quickly. Use the arrows to narrow down the area you must explore, and utilize the numbers to figure your distance to the flag.
In game variations where the flag is stationary, finding a bomb is not a big deal; just return to the same area in which you were searching. In moving-flag games, however, remember that the flag will move another square when you unearth the bomb.
