Controls
Terry, Andy, and Joe all have three basic attacks. The first is punch, a light strike aimed for the head or torso. The second is kick, a stronger attack aimed for the midsection and feet. Finally, there's throw, the most powerful attack, but it can only be performed at close range. These attacks are performed (intuitively enough) with the punch, kick, and throw buttons. You can also execute more powerful special moves by entering a joystick command, followed by the punch or kick buttons.
Getting Started
Press the one player start button to throw your hat into the South Town tournament. The character select screen will then appear. Press left and right on the controller to highlight either Terry Bogard, his brother Andy, or their friend Joe Higashi, then press the punch button. Next, move the controller in any direction to select your first opponent, and press punch to start the match!
Movement
When the action begins, press left and right on the controller to walk in those directions. You can also hold left to intercept your opponent's attacks. Hold down on the controller to duck under high attacks, and press up to leap over low strikes. You can also jump from the foreground to the background by pressing the kick button, but this only works when your opponent has retreated into the background first.
Matches
Each fight in the South Town tournament takes place over three rounds. Each fighter gets a full supply of health (shown as a yellow bar on the top of the screen) at the start of the round. The first fighter to completely drain their opponent's health with attacks wins that round. Win two rounds and you'll advance to a new, more difficult battle. If you've lost a fight, you can get back in the ring by pressing the one player start button before time expires.
Tip: Two Against One
Having trouble beating that opponent? Well, grab a friend and an extra controller, and then press the two player start button. You'll knock out that goon twice as quickly when you team up with a buddy!
Tip: Bonus Rounds
There are three bonus rounds in Fatal Fury, which pop up after you've beaten a couple of opponents. These stages were pretty tough in the arcade, but they're a breeze if you're playing the game at home. If you have a rapid-fire setting on your controller, just hold down the punch button for easy victories!
