Getting Started
Press the one player start button to begin the game, then the two player start button if you'd like to take on a friend. At the character select screen, press the controller in any direction to move the 1P marker over one of the available characters, then tap an attack button to confirm your selection. Next, press the controller in any direction to choose either Franco Bash, Blue Mary, Joe Higashi, or Bob Wilson as your first opponent, then press an attack button.
Movement
At the start of the fight, press left or right on the controller to walk in those directions; pressing away from the opponent puts you in a defensive stance and lets you block your opponent's attacks. Hold down and you'll duck; press forward while holding down and you'll slowly creep toward your rival. Finally, tap up and you'll leap into the air. Press up together with either left or right and you'll jump in either direction.
Planes of Movement
The heroes of South Town are a bit more agile than your ordinary fighters -- in addition to ducking and jumping, they can also dodge into the foreground or background, slipping past their adversaries' most punishing blows. Tap quick punch and quick kick together to dive into the background, and tap power punch and power kick together to retreat into the foreground. Just remember, you can only stay in these hiding places for a second at a time, and you're not invulnerable there!
Controls
Each fighter has two punches and two kicks. Tap the quick punch and quick kick buttons to land blows with blinding speed, or hit the power punch and power kick buttons to really sock it to your foe! Your hero is also armed with an assortment of mind-blowing special moves... you can perform these by entering a controller motion (for instance, down, down-right, and right), followed by one of the attack buttons. You'll discover all the special moves a fighter has with a little experimentation.
Matches
Each fight consists of two rounds, with each fighter receiving a full health bar at the start of the round. You'll need to empty your opponent's health bar with punches and kicks to win a round. Win two rounds and you'll advance to a new fight against a more fearsome opponent. If you lose a fight, don't sweat it -- you can always give it another shot by tapping the one player start button before time expires.
Tip: Planar Problems
If your opponent is driving you crazy by dodging all your attacks, there's a way to trick them into taking the beating they deserve. Use a light special move to drive your foe into the foreground or background, then time your next strike so it connects just as the pesky pugilist slides back into the active playfield.
Tip: Ready For Launch!
Several of the punches and kicks in Fatal Fury 3 are launchers. If you hit your rival with a launcher, they'll be sent skyward, flung to the edge of the screen, or slammed to the floor. Launchers not only do more damage than regular attacks, but let you put some distance between yourself and an opponent.
Tip: Throws
If you're close to an opponent, press the controller toward them and tap the power punch button repeatedly. You'll sink a brief but damaging series of punches into their gut! Alternately, you can just throw your rival by holding down the power punch or power kick buttons, but keep in mind that some throws do more damage than others.
