Combat Planes
Though it's a side-view, 2D fighting game, Fatal Fury 2 has two parallel "planes" that create the illusion of fighting in a three-dimensional world. Push light punch and light kick simultaneously to jump between these planes. It takes some getting used to, because few other games had such a system, but once you've got the hang of them, you can really use the two plane system to your advantage -- just quickly switch planes if you need to dodge an attack.
Bosses
You must fight your way through seven bouts all around the world to qualify for the King of Fighters final rounds. This is where the fury really gets fatal -- there are three boss characters, each more powerful than the last, and you've got to defeat them all before facing Wolfgang Krauser. All of the game bosses are considerably more challenging than the regular ladder opponents, but they all have key weaknesses you can exploit. Once you defeat Krauser, you see your character's ending.
Basics
Fatal Fury 2 is a 2D fighting game similar to Street Fighter or Samurai Shodown. You choose one of the eight available characters and pummel your way up the King of Fighters tournament ladder. Your final objective is to defeat the game's three boss characters and then face Wolfgang Krauser in an epic final confrontation. Each character has their own storyline, special moves and fighting styles, so there is a lot to experience.
Controls
Control your character with the direction keys or gamepad, and attack using the light and heavy punch and kick buttons. Try different combinations of these to unleash your character's various combos and super moves. The game includes a short demonstration of the controls and how they work, so if you've never played a fighting game before you'll have something to get you started. FF2 is one of the earliest 2D fighters, and lacks the complexity of later games in the genre, so it's easy to learn.
Tip: Strong Attack
Press hard punch and hard kick simultaneously to deliver an extra powerful attack that knocks your opponent across the screen.
Tip: Desperation Move
Desperation Attacks are last-ditch combos that are only available when your character's health is very low. Think of it as pro fighting's version of pulling your goalie.
Tip: Dodging
Quickly tap the direction keys away from your opponent to execute a speedy dodge.
Tip: Defensive Attack
Tap backward and light punch to attack defensively -- this blow doesn't do much damage, but it allows you to strike without opening yourself up for a dangerous hit.
