Playing Codebreaker is easy. Winning is not. The objective is to guess a three- or four-digit numeric code based on feedback from previous guesses. To begin, select your game type, then push game reset to begin. If you're playing against the computer, you may begin immediately. In head-to-head two player games, your human opponent will key in the code, and you must guess it.
At the right, the computer will display your results. A black line indicates that one of the digits you've chosen is both correct and in the correct position, two black lines mean two digits are correct and in the right place, and so forth. White lines indicate that one of the digits you've chosen is the correct number, but not in the right position.
A cursor flashes on the left of the screen. Above it, the number of guesses you have made is displayed. To begin, key in a numeric code and hit enter. The individual digits can span from 1-6 or 1-9, depending on game type. The computer will not allow you to input a code that's outside of the game span; if you hear an alarmingly unpleasant noise, you've either tried to input an out-of-span digit or haven't entered a full guess.
In Nim, one to four stacks of objects appear on the screen. You and the computer or you and a friend take turns removing objects from a stack. You can remove as many as you like, but only from a single stack - and you must remove something every turn. In most games, the one who removes the last item wins. You can also choose a game type where the loser is the one who removes the last item. Nim may seem simple, but it is fiendishly difficult - especially against a computer.
Here's where the strategy begins: based on the computer's feedback, you must now decipher the code in as few guesses as possible. When you've correctly identified the code, you score points equal to the number of guesses you made. In this game, lower scores are better.
Once you've got one or two digits confirmed, start a linear sequence of guesses to match the others.
The sooner you can narrow down a few correct digits and locations, the fewer guesses you'll need.
Always remember to check your guess history. Don't waste a guess on a mistake - check your previous guesses to make sure that you're not choosing something you know to be wrong based on prior feedback.
