Controls
Turning around in mid-flight allows you to make a 180-degree turn. This is important because while the battle will take place on both sides of your gunship, your only weapons are forward-firing laser cannons. The good news is that the screen is looped. Fly past the front of your column and you automatically start again at the rear.
Basics
Chopper Command’s rules of engagement are simple. Push up to take your gunship up, push down to drop, and push left or right to fly forward. Left to its own devices, your gunship will simply hover.
Radar
You begin your mission with a 12-truck convoy. The radar at the bottom of your screen shows all enemy aircraft and friendly trucks within a four-mile radius. Both friend and foe are displayed in yellow. Your gunship is displayed as a black dot. Keep an eye out for enemies -- they will attack in 10 waves of 12 aircraft that target both you and your convoy. You get 100 points for destroying helicopters and 200 points for jets.
Enemies
Chopper Command offers both single- and two-player games that can be played on two difficulty levels -- “Cadet” (easy) and “Commander” (hard).
Tip: Keep Moving
Both your convoy and enemy aircraft move from right to left, so sometimes it is better to let your enemies come to you rather than rushing into the fray. But be careful, dally too long and your convoy will suffer.
Tip: Scanner
Keep a good eye on your long-range scanner. You can’t shoot enemies from off-screen, but you can line up your chopper to prepare for when they appear.
Tip: Truck Bonus
Score major points for successfully defending your convoy. At the end of each wave, the game multiplies your dog fighting points by the number of trucks that survived.
