Movement
Though you can't control the rate at which you move forward, you can accelerate or decelerate slightly to move back and forth as you advance. You can also move side to side as far as you'd like; the screen continues to follow you no matter how far you go.
Basics
You control a tiny fighter craft which can fire a single blast at a time from its nose cannon. Countless enemies await you as you zoom into action: missiles, jetcraft, mines and, at the end of each zone, a mighty boss ship with impressive firepower.
Powerups
There are ten Battlewing attachments in the game. Some of them are incredibly powerful but have limited range (the Dyna Wing fires a piercing diamond that blows through all enemies but only travels a short distances), while others are weaker but have specific applications (the Jump wing fires artillery than rises and falls, making it capable of hitting enemies on the other side of barriers). Generally, you can't go wrong with the wings that fire to the left and right.
Tip: Below the Radar
When you have no battlewings attached, the ship can descend to fly low to the ground for a moment. This is a great way to avoid enemy fire, but watch out for ground-based obstacles. If you smash into them, you'll lose a life.
Tip: Damage
Once you begin to acquire B-Wing components, your ship will present a larger target for enemies to hit. Be especially careful -- once you start taking damage, your battlewings will cause your ship to veer out of control and eventually explode, so you'll be forced to discard them.
Tip: Side Shot
The side shot, which fires 3 bullets both left and right but only 1 forward, is weak in normal situations but indispensible in others. Don't be too quick to discard it -- you might need it.
