Basics
In Art of Fighting, you must guide Ryo Sakazaki and his best friend Robert Garcia through encounters with some of Southtown's most dangerous thugs as the pair struggle to rescue Ryo's sister Yuri from the evil Mr. Big. This 2D fighting game is a contemporary of arcade classics like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, and it earned a legion of fans during the height of the genre's success. A cheesy single player story and action-packed head to head mode combine for some awesome fighting action.
Controls
The four button control system found in Art of Fighting will be familiar to anyone who's used to 2D fighters, particularly those from SNK. Move your character with the direction keys or joystick, and use the buttons to punch and kick your foes. The fierce attack button is used for throws or increased attack power at the cost of speed, while the fourth button taunts your foes, hopefully getting them so angry that they do something stupid and open up their defenses.
Characters
In the single-player storyline of Art of Fighting, only the characters Ryo and Robert are available to play. You can choose between all eight available characters (plus two secret ones) in the two-player head to head matches, but the single player story doesn't work unless you play as Ryo or Robert. You'll face all the other characters one at a time in the single-player ladder, culminating in your final encounters with the evil Mr. Big and even more evil Mr. Karate.
Special Moves
All characters in Art of Fighting have a spirit meter that appears below their life bar. Each special attack you perform drains a little of the spirit meter, and once it's empty, you're no longer able to pull off your most dangerous combos. You can help drain your opponent's spirit meter with taunts; being mocked is bad for morale and knocks a bit off their total. Of course, you are temporarily vulnerable during a taunt move, so be careful. Your spirit meter will slowly recharge over time.
Tip: Super Attack
Once you've successfully completed a bonus round, your character is granted access to a super attack. This special combo is extra-destructive -- use it to really bring your opponents to their knees.
Tip: Faster Spirit Charge
You can speed up the "charging" of your spirit meter by tapping the punch and kick buttons together. Be careful, though -- like a taunt, this maneuver leaves you open to attack, so put some distance between you and your foe.
Tip: Finishers
The finishing maneuvers in Art of Fighting aren't the gore-fests you might expect from other games, but they can uncover story points and other surprises. When a foe is on his or her last legs, just unleash your super attack for an occasionally unexpected conclusion.
Tip: Desperation
If your health bar is flashing red, you're close to being KOed. Under these circumstances, you can launch a Desperation Attack that's only available when you're nearly on the mat. It might be enough to turn the tables.
