Starting out
Aces Over Europe provides both single-mission and campaign play modes, including a set of training missions to teach new players how to earn their wings. Select your allegiance to one of three World War II forces: you can fight for the U.S Army Air Force, the British Royal Air Force, or the German Luftwaffe. After choosing your allegiance, click Accept, then click Start to begin your mission.
Movement
The flight stick adjusts your fighter's direction, the rudders let you move left and right, and the throttle adjusts your speed. The numeric keypad on your keyboard is used to control the flight stick. Press 8 to dive, and 2 to climb upward. Press 4 to roll to the left, and 6 to roll to the right.
Controls
The rudders let you steer your plane to the left and right. Press the < key to tilt the left rudder. Press the > key to tilt the right rudder. Releasing these buttons returns the rudders to their initial positions. Finally, to control the speed of your ship, press the - key to decrease your speed, and the + key to increase it. Press the * key to achieve maximum flight speed.
Combat
Soon after you take to the skies, you'll be attacked by enemy planes. Guide the planes into your crosshairs and press the space bar to fire your machine guns. Your guns aren't always reliable and will occasionally jam; tap the U button repeatedly to try to clear the gun of obstructions. Press R to fire rockets, and the backspace key to drop bombs on ground-based targets.
Landing
You'll want to return to your headquarters when you're finished with your mission. Fly back to the landing strip where you began your mission, then fly down toward it and press L to drop your landing gear. When you touch down, adjust the flaps with F and hit the W key to apply the landing brakes.
Tip: Map
Press the M key at any time during gameplay to bring up the map screen. The map allows you to pinpoint your current location and the locations of enemy fighters and other mission targets. Press the ESC key to close the map and return to the game.
Tip: Confusing Cockpits
Each plane controls a little differently, and cockpits often have different control panels. Experiment to see which layout suits you best.
