Basics
The purpose of the A-10 is to lend support to ground troops, so your missions will largely involve flying around and shooting at things on the ground. Steer with the directional buttons. The Fire button shoots 30MM cannon rounds. The Special button fires special weapons like missiles. Use keyboard commands to manage your weapons, to control your speed, to bring up your map, and to perform other minor functions.
Weapons
The A-10A has a large arsenal of specialized weapons. You need to know each weapon and its intended use. Mavericks are air-to-ground missiles intended for enemy planes. Paveways are laser-guided bombs for buildings and bridges. Sidewinders are air-to-air missiles for shooting at other aircraft. Rockeye cluster bombs take out foes in a wide area, and Durandal bombs take down airstrips and fortified installations.
Missions
You can fly each and every mission individually or begin a campaign in which the missions form one cohesive tour of duty. Beginners should fly mission one before attempting anything else; it was designed as a tutorial.
Co-Pilot
You are not flying into combat alone. You have a co-pilot named Jake who will appear to warn and advise you as you fly your missions. You should probably pay attention when he appears onscreen, since his tips can really save your bacon.
Tip: Options
You can set the parameters of each mission to make them a bit more favorable. First, you can set the "threat level" to mild, moderate, or aggressive. You can set your ammunition to unlimited. You can also set your armor to invincible. Selecting these setting may not guarantee you victory, but they make it more likely.
Tip: Incoming!
Your A-10 was designed to withstand multiple hits from surface-to-air missions (SAMS), but that doesn't mean you want to test your luck. Your HUD includes an RWR (radar warning reviewer) that will alert you to incoming threats. If the RWR flashes red, indicates a SAM attack. A blue dot indicates an air attack. A white dot indicates a missile attack.
